Coaching and working with children at PlayCricket Suomi – Guidelines and principles
Everyone in the PlayCricket Suomi (“club”) honours and respects the opinions and integrity of all members, including juniors. There are several documents that provide guidance on approved behaviour, including the club’s code of conduct and rules as well as the codes and rules Cricket Finland requires clubs to abide by, such as the FCA Anti-Corruption Code, FCA Anti-Competition Manipulation Programme, FCA Anti-Doping Programme, FCA Anti-Doping Rules, FCA Equality and Non-Discrimination Plan, FCA Code of Conduct and Spirit of Cricket and FCA Ethics Policy. These documents are available on playcricketsuomi.fi and/or kriketti.fi.
The volunteers who primarily work with and/or teach young club members are the coaches. The club aims to provide a safe and secure environment for its members to enjoy playing cricket. We achieve this by doing the following:
- Paying attention to who we recruit as a coach, and how; explaining to him or her the codes and rules mentioned above and encouraging him or her to take ICC approved coaching courses; for example, the ICC Level 1 coaching course addresses the basics of how to pay attention to the safety issues involved with playing cricket and how to respect the physical boundaries of children and how to coach children by giving constructive feedback.
- Teaching our members about the Spirit of Cricket and guiding them on how to act appropriately if they witness or experience any physical or verbal abuse.
- Using the GDPR-compliant SuomiSport platform to handle and store our members’ personal information; explaining what information is gathered and for what use; and providing the opportunity to check this information.
- Sharing information among the club volunteers who need to handle personal information about how to do so in a GDPR-compliant manner (for example, by coaches holding a roll call for each session).
- Asking for approval to publish photos of members.
- Checking the criminal backgrounds of its volunteers involved in coaching through the Legal Register Centre (Act 148/2014). In Finland, a person who starts working with minors in their studies, employment or volunteer work needs an extract from their criminal record. This practice is intended to protect minors. The club will order the extracts, check them, return them to the person and only store the name of the person and the date of when the extract was checked. If the person has the extract already, he/she can present it to the club as well.
- Providing both male and female contacts, representing the club, who can be approached by anyone and report any behaviour or activity that contravenes the codes, rules or principles mentioned above – and identifying these persons to the members of the club so they know who to approach.
- Systematically collecting feedback from members, parents and guardians, as well as coaches.
If any violation of the rules and codes mentioned are reported, the Board of PlayCricket Suomi will make a decision on further action after hearing all parties. The Board will also consult a third party if needed.
Persons with a criminal background cannot work or coach at PlayCricket Suomi.
